Linux Kernel 6.10 is out! This update comes with plenty of new features and improvements from hardware support, security, to performance. Here’s is a breakdown of what’s new in Kernel 6.10.

• Improved Hardware Support: Enhanced support for a wider range of Intel and AMD, GPUs, and network controllers. Expect better compatibility with most newer hardware.
• Security Improvements: Addition of new security features such as encrypted interactions with Trusted Platform Modules (TPM).

Step 1: Update your OS

Ensure you are on the latest software versions in your Ubuntu Linux machine.

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade -y

Check if your system require a reboot after upgrading everything.

[ -f /var/run/reboot-required ] && sudo reboot -f

Step 2: Download Kernel script installer

We will use ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh script that automates the installation of Kernel on Ubuntu (and derivatives as LinuxMint) from the Ubuntu Kernel PPA.

Install wget and curl utilities:

sudo apt install curl wget

Download the script in your Ubuntu Linux.

Make the script executable.

chmod +x ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh

Move the script to /usr/local/bin/ directory.

sudo mv ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh /usr/local/bin/

Step 3: Install Linux Kernel 6.10 on Ubuntu

To list all Kernel releases available in the PPA repository run:

ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh -r

The results can be filtered to only show v6.x

From the output we can see the latest being 6.10.6, the results could be different for you depending on the time you’re running the commands.

To install the latest kernel version, execute:

sudo ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh -i

To install a specific version, run the commands below while replacing <version> with the version number you want to install.

sudo ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh -i <latest-version>

For example to install v6.10.6 we will run:

sudo ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh -i v6.10.6

Step 4: Reboot Your System

Once you have confirmed the installation to be successful, reboot the system to start using the newly installed kernel version.

sudo shutdown -r now

After the system is rebooted, verify that you are using the new kernel:

$ uname -r
6.10.6-061006-generic

Step 5: Uninstalling Kernel (for reference only)

You can uninstall the kernel version from a list anytime by running the following command.

sudo ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh -u

Select the version to uninstall.

Step 6: Checking new kernel on login (optional)

To automatically check for new kernel releases when you login, run the commands below:

wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pimlie/ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh/master/UbuntuMainlineKernel.desktop
mv UbuntuMainlineKernel.desktop ~/.config/autostart/
