In this guide, we are going to be looking at how to install FreeOffice on Linux Mint 22. FreeOffice is a free and completely featured office office suit for personal and commercial use. It is an excellent alternative to Microsoft Office Suit.

FreeOffice has ability to share content directly to and from Microsoft Office. Users without having them exprted first. comes with all formats such as DOCX, DOC, PPTX, XLS and PPT. Also supports Libre Office OPenDocument Text (ODT). Is available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

Components of FreeOffice

FreeOffice comes with the following three major modules to perform different functions.

1. TextMaker.

In Microsoft we call it Word Processor. Enables user to create and edit a word document in .DOCX and .DOC format.

2. PlanMaker.

Also known as Excel in Microsoft. Is an application that is used to create spreadsheets. spreadsheets helps in calculation, record keeping and planning.

3. SoftMaker Presentation.

Also known as power-point. Used in preparing slides for presentation especially in conferences and lectures.

Installing FreeOffice on Linux Mint 22

There are two methods in which you can install FreeOffice on Linux Mint 22.

Method 1: Using APT repository

By using the SoftMaker repository, you can easily install SoftMaker FreeOffice 2021 and keep it up to date. This version remains generally up-to-date without the need to use third-party installation managers.

Install necessary packages:

sudo apt install dirmngr ca-certificates software-properties-common apt-transport-https curl -y

Add the repository to your system using the following commands:

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/softmaker.gpg] https://shop.softmaker.com/repo/apt stable non-free' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/softmaker.list"

Then import repository GPG key:

curl -fsSL https://shop.softmaker.com/repo/linux-repo-public.key | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/softmaker.gpg > /dev/null

Finally update and install FreeOffice 2021 on Linux Mint 22:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install softmaker-freeoffice-2021

FreeOffice packages can be upgraded at any point in time with other packages installed in the system:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Method 2: Manual Installation

Step 1: Download FreeOffice

The first step is to download the latest version of freeOffice that is compatible with your system. Use the commands below to download FreeOffice for Linux Mint 22.

For 64-bit system, the command is:

wget https://www.freeoffice.com/download.php?filename=https://www.softmaker.net/down/softmaker-freeoffice-2024_1224-01_amd64.deb -O softmaker-freeoffice.deb

Installation example:

sudo apt install ./softmaker-freeoffice.deb

Step 2: Install FreeOffice on Linux Mint 22

Change to the directory of your freeoffice download and install it. Use the following commands:

cd /path/to/file
sudo apt install ./<freeoffice_filename>

Note: During download, choose a file that is compatible to you your architecture. For me, am installing a 64 bits. If process runs in to an error (breaking in dependencies) leading to incomplete installation, please run the following command to find and build dependencies to complete installation.

sudo apt install -f

Run the following commands to update and upgrade repositories.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade -y

Launch and use FreeOffice on Linux Mint 22

Your FreeOffice is now available and ready to use. To start FreeOffice, press the Home Key then search FreeOffice in search bar.

Choose the component you want to start. In this case, I will select FreeOffice 2021 TextMaker.

Select your desired interface either from Ribbon or Classic Interfaces to continue. If you prefer using large icons then select check-box in the option label. Click OK to continue. If interested, you can create your FreeOffice profile by filling the form above. It is optional so you can too ignore by clicking OK.

Now you have successfully configured your working environment to create and edit a word document.
